Guatemala

Guatemala is one of the western hemisphere countries where the illiteracy rate is at its peak. Children are deprived of their basic need of education. About 70% of the children–enrolled in schools– lack essential reading and writing skills. Furthermore, the environment of schools is disastrous. The classrooms are in wretched condition. Teachers lack the potential and skills to educate the children properly. Children get bored in classes. They have no proper access to books.

In addition, according to a school census conducted by the Ministry of Education, Guatemala, 73000 children, aged between 5 and 7, do not have any formal education. 68000 children, between 7 and 14, had some schooling (Statistics of 2017). Thus, these circumstances lead to a high percentage of Out-of-School Children. The figure given below shows the completion of female primary education until 2015.

Considering the educational crisis of Guatemala, several developments have been initiated. UNESCO is promoting the digitalization of education in Guatemala with the Guatemalan Institute of Radio Education (IGER) and HUAWEI Guatemala. In this regard, 50 scholarships were given to elementary and high school children in 2021.

UNESCO aims to complete the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal for providing quality education. UNESCO Malala Fund is also critical in this regard. Moreover, the Government is making efforts for a globalized curriculum, mainly focusing on secondary schools. Several NGOs are working for the educational betterment of Guatemala, such as Education and Hope, Niños de Guatemala, Cooperative for Education, and many more.
