Honduras

The education system of Honduras is facing multi-sided problems. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the condition even more. The research by the Norwegian Refugee Council stated that about 50% of the children are Out-of-School. In addition, the dropout rate in Honduras is also saddening. In 2019, 105,971 students left schools.

According to the Ministry of Education Data, 20,398 and 7,746 students from elementary and secondary schools dropped out, respectively. The biggest issues of dropouts are violence, lack of educational facilities, poorly-trained teachers, and poverty. The miserable condition of children’s education in Honduras is explained in the chart given below.

To counter the educational challenges of Honduras, UNICEF has been working with government, private sectors, and international financial organizations to invest in the education of Honduras. Furthermore, the Government Education Plan aims to develop the country’s education to the next level in collaboration with different organizations. The most important issue of dropout children is also under consideration. Under the Global Partnership Education (GPE)’s program, the dropout children are encouraged to start their studies again through Distance learning.

Apart from this, several NGOs are working in Honduras to promote quality education such as Global Giving, NGO Explorer, and Save the Children.
